Do’s and Don’ts of Successful Invisalign Treatment

Invisalign is a popular orthodontic treatment due to its convenience, discreet appearance, and consistent effectiveness. However, whether or not your treatment is successful depends a great deal on your personal habits. How can you make sure that your journey with Invisalign goes smoothly from start to finish? Here are some key dos and don’ts for Invisalign users:

Do Keep Your Aligners Clean

If you fail to keep your aligners clean, they could collect odors and bacteria. Your oral health may also be placed in jeopardy. Rinse your aligners after meals and clean them thoroughly each night by brushing them with clear, mild soap. You should also regularly soak them in denture-cleaning solution or use Invisalign cleaning crystals.

Do Brush and Floss Regularly

Ensure your teeth are clean before wearing your aligners by brushing and flossing after each meal, as well as each morning and evening. It would be wise to carry a small oral hygiene kit with you for on-the-go care.

Do Wear Your Aligners Enough

Remember, Invisalign aligners only work when you are wearing them, so experts recommend that you keep them in your mouth for 20 – 22 hours each day. Resist the temptation to frequently remove them. Otherwise, you could slow down your treatment’s progress and delay your final results.

Do Not Eat and Drink While Wearing Your Aligners

The only thing you should consume while wearing your aligners is plain water. Avoid other beverages and foods because they can stain or warp your Invisalign trays. Using your aligners to chew could seriously damage them.

Do Not Lose Track of Your Aligners

Too many patients have accidentally lost track of their aligners, leading to delays in their treatment and needless anxiety. Store your aligners in their case when not in use. Avoid wrapping them in napkins at mealtimes or leaving them out where pets might take them.

Do Not Smoke

Smoking can quickly cause your aligners to become discolored, causing them to lose their discreet appearance. This habit could also cause your Invisalign to collect unpleasant odors that are difficult to get rid of. If you need assistance to quit smoking, talk to your primary care provider or another qualified medical professional.
