Veneers are a premium cosmetic dentistry treatment that can hide a broad range of aesthetic imperfections. For example, they could be perfect for you if you have chipped teeth, discoloration, or minor spacing issues. But still, you may hesitate to get them because you are concerned that they might make you miss out on your favorite foods. How will veneers affect your diet? This blog post provides some helpful information.

Eating with Temporary Veneers

Before you receive permanent veneers, you will need to wear temporary ones for a while. To protect them, you should:

  • Avoid sticky foods. Things like taffy and caramel might pull the veneers right off your teeth!
  • Minimize highly pigmented items. Temporary veneers can incur stains, so it is best to limit your intake of coffee and other dark foods and beverages.
  • Be aware of sensitivity. Some patients experience increased dental sensitivity while wearing temporary veneers. Extremely hot and cold items can exacerbate this issue.
  • Be careful with hard items. Hard foods might break your veneers, so caution is in order when you are biting into anything with a firm or tough texture.

Try to stick to eating mostly soft and minimally pigmented foods, such as bread, poultry, pasta with white sauce, and similar items.

Eating with Permanent Veneers

You might need to wear your temporary veneers for just a few weeks. After they are replaced by your permanent veneers, you can enjoy virtually any food in moderation. Permanent veneers are very durable and resistant to stains, so feel free to indulge in your favorite snacks, meals, and beverages.

Of course, it is still important to be reasonable. Just like natural teeth, some foods are better for veneers than others. Here are a few tips to keep your veneers in good shape:

  • Minimize alcohol consumption. Alcohol may weaken the bonding agent that keeps your veneers in place.
  • Drink dark liquids through a straw. Even though veneers are resistant to stains, they can become discolored over time. Drinking through a straw minimizes the liquid’s contact with your teeth.
  • Prevent breakage. Biting down on ice or other hard items might break your veneers.

Veneers should have only a minor long-term effect on your diet. Ask your dentist if you have questions about how you should eat in order to protect your new smile.
